Pet safety is a big concern for many owners.
I have massive trust issues when it comes to my naughty huskies, Pencil and Paper (yes, those are their names…I’m a writer, what can I say).
I love them to bits, but they cannot be trusted to stay out of trouble when I look the other way.
So, it’s no surprise that my recent internet browser history shows a string of searches for “home alone pet protection gadgets”.
Best 3 Pet Gadgets for Home Alone Dogs
There are tons of tech toys for dogs these days, but I was specifically looking for ones that will give me peace of mind while I’m not at home to keep an eye on my dogs.
These were my top favourite finds.
Tracking Device
While getting your dogs chipped is a great idea and will allow you to be notified if your pet is found and scanned, microchips do not track your pooche’s movements.
Having a device that you can access with your phone to see where your dogs are at any time is more ideal. I like the more high-end trackers, they are a bit sturdier, water-resistant, and more compact for comfort.
I like both the Tractive Dog GPS Tracker as well as the K9 Ultimate Plus Tracker. They are a bit pricier, but when it comes to tracking your dog, you want to invest in a device that can withstand wear and tear.
Both the Tractive and K9 Ultimate Plus trackers are water-resistance and have an app that you can add on your smartphone to check up on your pooch’s location. If your dog is a bit of a free runner, like mine are, then a tracking app is a must.
Modern Feeder
Next on my “home alone pet protection tech” list is a smart feeder. It’s never a healthy decision to leave out a big tub of pet food and still-standing water for your pet and assume they’ll be fine for a few days.
Pets, like humans, can and will overindulge and develop bad eating habits and gain an unhealthy amount of weight that can cause medical problems.
So, I opted for a Xiaomi Smart Pet Feeder, which is so cool! You can set a feeding schedule to ensure your doggos stick to a healthy meal plan, and in cases of a treat, you can even do feedings while away using the app.
If you tend to forget to buy dog food each month, no worries, the Xiaomi Smart Pet Feeder has built-in infrared sensors to monitor food levels continuously, sending real-time alerts via the Xiaomi Home app and its LED display when supplies run low.
There are more affordable options that are still great, like this Papifeed Automatic Feeder on Amazon.

For water, I like a gadget that keeps the water constantly moving and filtering out any residue that lands in the bowl.
The Drinkwell water fountains are great options: they come in a variety of sizes, I prefer the 7.5 liter one for my huskies, and they filter the water to get rid of impurities, and offer water in a flowing stream thanks to the nifty pump system.
Life can get crazy busy, but that doesn’t mean your dogs should be neglected. I have a few apps to help me offer the best care for my huskies.
One that falls within the “home alone pets” category, if the PetBacker app. This app allows you to find pet loving caretakers within your area, from groomers, to walkers, to sitters.
They’re all there. Payment solutions are still a bit of a stickler with the PetBacker app, as PayPal is required by the freelancers.
Other than that, it’s a great app to quickly sort out a sitter or even boarding option for your home alone pets that tend to veer on the more mischievous side.
Gadgets not for you? All good so long as you have Medical Insurance.
Whether you’re a tech fan like me, or prefer to keep things less futuristic, if your pet is home alone for long periods of time, please ensure you have them covered for medical emergencies.
Pets are like our children, and like children, they get curious and may be prone to get into trouble when you’re not around.
Nobody wants to come home to a medical emergency and the vet bill that will follow, so be sure you can financially cover any home alone accidents without stressing about money by investing in a pet medical insurance plan.
